Another Odd Money Opportunity..Sort Of

At the end of last year, my dad proposed that he will pay for liposuction as well as stomach stapling surgery if I will seriously choose to have them to shed excess weight this year. At first, I felt insulted since I feel that all he sees of me is a fat woman who is "running out of time"...his words. Although, I do see that this is one of his ways of showing me that he loves me and wants me to be healthy.

I'm big but I'm not grotesquely obese! I don't qualify for a stomach stapling surgery anyway. But I am thinking of couter-proposing on his offer. I would propose that if I can lose the excess weight this year via regular exercise and healthful eating habits, he can just give me the money he would have spent on my liposuctions, and allow me to save that money! I am not sure how he'll respond to it. Probably a "no...or a maybe". It won't hurt to ask. What he doesn't know is that I've already lost four pounds since the time of his proposal, and I am confident that I will lose more.

Gosh, I am so spoiled. *Note* The First Odd Money Opportunity was as post in November, 2005. Somehow, that post is not showing up as its own html page and I don't know how to link to it.

*EDIT*

Thanks to Jane Dough at Bostongal's Openwallet , here's the link to the other Odd Money Opportunity .

I think that is a great idea! You will have a reason to shed pounds.... and will not have to go through dangerous surgery. Ask him for sure.

I think any parent willing to pay for liposuction would be willing to reward you for losing weight the hard way. Not sure how I'd react if my parents offered this...I'd be massively offended at the very least, but then, I'm not from Orange County where people have plastic surgery all the time.

You are 27! God help us all if you are "running out of time".

I agree that if your dad cares enought to offer the surgery he should care even more to reward you to lose weight the healthy way.

    Good Luck!

  5. The stomach bypass surgery would be one thing, but I haven't heard of anyone's health being improved by liposuction, and people usually end up needing it again a couple of years later.
I would get him to pay for a nice gym and a personal trainer! Doing that for a full year would still cost you way less than the surgeries.

  7. Thanks! I definitely want to go the traditional way...I know..sometimes parents mean well, but just comes out differently.

I'm hoping that this weekend, when I'll see him, the proposal goes well and he accepts.

The alternative would be to ask for what Madame X suggested; for a year's worth of personal training I've never attempted that due to sessions being so expensive but would like to. *crosses fingers*

Thanks so much for the link!; I'm not very computer, lol!

  8. Holy crap, I thought my stepmom was bad. I would go berserk if one of my parents said this to me.

When my stepmother makes oblique references to my weight (for about five years I have had a very curvy figure with about 35 lbs of extra weight) I try to remember that she's just fat-phobic and it probably comes from her own self-judgements and fears.

Great idea for turning his proposal around. I hope trying to lose the weight is empowering for you and not the reverse.
